述曰：是第一義，難陀、勝子皆作是說。此師意說，第七現識唯依第八種子識。不依彼現行，以第七恒無間。不假現識為俱有依，約依種子故名依彼。下護法等諸論師釋。

The Commentary states: This is the first opinion; Nanda and Jayaputra both maintained this explanation. The intention of this master is to state that the active consciousness of the seventh relies solely upon the seed consciousness of the eighth. It does not rely upon its active manifestation, because the seventh is continuous and uninterrupted. It does not require the active consciousness as its co-arising basis (*sahabhū-āśraya*); it is called "relying on that" in terms of relying on seeds.
