The Commentary states: "Continuous flow" has the meaning of uninterrupted succession; "operating" has the meaning of arising. It means the sense of continuously arising based on the seeds or the active manifestation of the eighth, demonstrating that this seventh consciousness always arises based on that eighth consciousness. "Because it apprehends an intentional object": this means that the cognitive aspect (*ākāra*) of the seventh apprehends its intentional object, arising continuously without interruption. The text above has thus far briefly explained that upon which it relies according to common principles; below, with "All minds and mental factors," it broadly explains that upon which they rely. Because in the treatment of the eighth consciousness above and the other consciousnesses below the meaning of that upon which they rely is not analyzed, it is now discussed extensively, following the main text below as an ancillary exposition. In this there are three parts: first, generally putting forth the three conventionally established bases; second, separately recounting that various masters have different hypotheses concerning the three bases; and finally, concluding with the correct doctrine.
