[The Commentary states:] Next, citing doctrinal proof. In the Viṃśatikā-vijñaptimātratā composed by Vasubandhu, his own commentary states: The World-Honoured One taught this doctrine of the twelve bases (āyatana) so that sentient beings who should receive the teaching on selflessness can enter into the selflessness of persons (pudgala-nairātmya). Dharmapāla composed a commentary on that treatise. Although the verses are twenty, the prose was also composed by Vasubandhu himself; this is the Treatise on Consciousness-Only translated earlier by Paramārtha and Bodhiruci. That translation has twenty-four verses, as the text contains redundant phrasing. This verse is the eleventh verse therein, which corresponds to the eighth verse in the present new translation. 'Arising from their own seeds': this master's intention holds that both the nimittabhāga and darśanabhāga are called 'own seeds'; the explanations below should follow this. 'Own' has three kinds: first, cause-and-condition, where 'own' is the seed of the darśanabhāga; second, objective condition (ālambana-pratyaya), where 'own' is the seed of the nimittabhāga—both of these possess the sense of 'own' in the text below; third, adhipati-pratyaya, the karmic seeds that can induce the five consciousnesses, because below Dharmapāla defends karma as being the sense faculties. 'Ten' refers to the ten material bases (rūpa-āyatana). The ancient treatise verse reads, 'therefore the Buddha spoke of these two', which is incorrect.
