述曰：為成十二處。為破外道有實我故，說五識種子名五色根，實無別根，即識種子名五根故。五識種子三釋，如前境不離識可許彼有，根離識故不別說有。五識相分，即色等塵。

[The Commentary states:] To establish the twelve bases, and to refute the externalists who hold that there is a real self, the seeds of the five consciousnesses were called the five material faculties; in reality, there are no separate faculties, because the seeds of consciousness are precisely called the five faculties. The seeds of the five consciousnesses have three interpretations as stated before. Because the cognitive object is not separate from consciousness, its existence may be conceded; because the faculties would be separate from consciousness, their existence is not stated separately. The nimittabhāga of the five consciousnesses is just the sensory dusts of form and so forth.
