The Commentary states: Since causal seeds follow actualities and thus pervade both wholesome and unwholesome, the eye and so forth should also not be exclusively indeterminate. If seeds were exclusively indeterminate, the substance of the five consciousnesses could not produce [karmic] fruit. That the five faculties are indeterminate is stated in Fascicle 4 of the Abhidharma-samuccaya-vyākhyā and elsewhere: eight dhātus, eight complete āyatanas, and a portion of the rest are indeterminate. The eight dhātus and āyatanas are the five physical faculties, odor, taste, and tangible dhātus and āyatanas; because the remainder pervades wholesome and unwholesome, it says 'a portion'. That seeds follow what they are subsumed under in actualities and therefore pervade wholesome and unwholesome is mutually accepted.
