述曰：上難本宗，下難救義，此申難也。護法假朋《二十唯識》等文為本，避前來過，設轉救之。眼等五根非識種子，感識業種即是五根，故一、無諸種雜；二、無識蘊雜；三、非外處雜；四、無因緣雜；五、無闕三依失；六、無根唯種失，隨下諸解一一疎條無雜過色。妙符二頌，銷釋可知。善須瑜伽，無前說過。

The Commentary states: Above refutes the fundamental tenet, and below refutes the defended meaning; this articulates the objection. Dharmapāla hypothetically draws upon the text of the Viṃśikā and others as a basis to avoid the previous faults, hypothetically setting forth an alternative defense: The five faculties such as the eye are not the seeds of consciousness, but the karmic seeds that produce consciousness are the five faculties. Thus: 1) there is no confusion of seeds; 2) there is no confusion of consciousness aggregates; 3) there is no confusion of external āyatanas; 4) there is no confusion of causal conditions; 5) there is no error of lacking three supports; 6) there is no error of faculties being solely seeds. Following the explanations below, each is itemized free from the faults of confusion. It wonderfully matches the two verses, and its explanation can be understood. It must skillfully agree with the Yogācārabhūmi, and is free of the previously stated faults.
