4.918

述曰：皆是依義。謂彼能熏六、七現行，是新所熏種子生依，是本有種子長依。前彼本無故，後此令增故，以能熏現行為生、長依，以異熟識為住依。第八現行雖不生種，種依彼住故，以異熟識現行為住依。問：若言初生及增長，唯可說能熏。若言相續住，唯可說異熟，何須雙說？

[The Commentary states:] Both possess the meaning of support. That is, those perfuming actives of the sixth and seventh are the generative support for newly perfumed seeds, and the growth support for innate seeds. The former is because they were originally non-existent, and the latter is because these cause them to increase; thus, the perfuming active serves as the support for generation and growth, and the ripening consciousness serves as the support for abidance. Although the active eighth does not generate seeds, seeds abide in reliance upon it; therefore, the active ripening consciousness serves as the support for abidance. Question: If one speaks of initial generation and augmentation, one can only speak of the perfumer; if one speaks of continuous abidance, one can only speak of the ripening; why is it necessary to state both?
