[The Commentary states:] Refuting the previous master with syllogisms: If the eighth consciousness does not pervasively rely on all faculties and yet were able to appropriate them, the six consciousnesses should be the same, since neither pervasively relies on them. If it does not rely on them at all and yet were able to appropriate them, the sixth consciousness should be the same, since it also does not rely on the five physical sense-faculties at all. The syllogism is: Your ripening consciousness cannot appropriate; because it does not pervasively rely on the physical sense-faculties; like the preceding six consciousnesses. Since it is a flawless syllogism, it forces it to not appropriate. Or: The preceding six consciousnesses could also appropriate the physical sense-organs and body; because by nature they are consciousnesses that do not pervasively rely on physical sense-faculties; like your accepted nature of the eighth consciousness. If one formulates the syllogism using only the sixth, the reason would be: because it does not even slightly rely on physical sense-faculties; like your accepted eighth. This is a great flaw; therefore it relies on the physical sense-faculties.
