The Commentary states: This resolves the contradiction. Just as in the citations immediately preceding, where 'support' (āśraya) is spoken of as 'reliance' (āśrita), all are metaphorical designations made according to convenience. First, they are metaphorical designations according to the inclinations [of listeners]; second, according to the convenience of the text. Supports are called reliances, and reliances are called supports; it does not mean that reliance and support can reciprocally cause each other. When considered carefully now, a support can be called a reliance, because the meaning of reliance is broad. Some are reliances but not supports, because the meaning of support is narrow. If so, how many consciousnesses possess this simultaneous support (sahabhū-āśraya)?
