述曰:雖五識俱意識明了,而不定有。無五識時意識亦有,故此不說。不取為所依,可是依義。何故餘處如《對法》第二等,又意依有二:一、無間滅意,是後世依;二、俱有依,謂第七不言第八?

The Commentary states: Although the mental consciousness is clear and distinct when operating together with the five consciousnesses, it is not definitely present. When the five consciousnesses are absent, the mental consciousness is also present, which is why [the five] are not mentioned here. They are not taken as that upon which it relies (āśraya), but they could be said to be things depended upon (āśrita). Why is it that in other places, such as the second fascicle of the Abhidharma-samuccaya-vyākhyā, etc., it is also said that the manas has two bases: first, the immediately preceding and ceased manas, which is the basis for subsequent moments; second, the simultaneously existing basis, which refers to the seventh [consciousness], without mentioning the eighth?
