The Commentary states: Below is the resolution of contradictions. The author of the treatise answers: This is spoken with reference to the veiled (nivṛta). That is, its absence in the three states is spoken with reference to the veiled nature that obstructs whichever vehicle. It is said that there is no manas because there is no veiled nature, not that there is no substance, for a consciousness that does not obstruct that vehicle, or an untainted consciousness, may also exist. Just as fascicle fifty-one states that the ālaya is absent in four states, which does not mean that the substance of the eighth is absent, this case should also be like that: it is not that the substance of the seventh is absent. Since it is uninterrupted, it can serve as a basis. As for the 'three states', fascicle sixty-three and others explain: they are the cessation absorption, the stage of the adept (aśaikṣa), and when the noble path is present. As for 'the ālaya is absent in four states', this refers to the four alternatives in fascicle fifty-one and fascicle seventeen of the Prakaraṇāryavācā, etc., where one accomplishes the transformed consciousnesses but not the ālaya, namely: śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, non-retrogressing bodhisattvas, and Tathāgatas, when not entering states of mindless absorption. Objection: The sixth takes the seventh as its basis, yet it is not that when the seventh transforms, the sixth does not operate. If the eighth takes the seventh as its basis, then when the seventh transforms, the eighth should transform. Moreover, the eighth serves as the basis for the seventh; when the basis transforms, the seventh also transforms. If the eighth takes the seventh as its basis, then when the basis transforms, the eighth also transforms. In this meaning, effort should be applied. 'Transform' here means transforming into untaintedness. Furthermore, as for the reason of each having a distinct basis: the eighth in the form realm also relies on the physical sense faculties, because it is a pervasive basis; why is this not mentioned?
