The Commentary states: From here down, it turns back to explain the term "affliction" (kleśa). Because it first listed the names and brought out the essential nature before explaining "affliction," such is the structure of the text. Here it explains the word "afflicting" (fán): to perturb means to disturb; to muddy means to obscure. These four constantly arise, perturbing and muddying the internal mind, not like the defilements in the remaining six consciousnesses that perturb and muddy other persons and so on, whose nature is unwholesome. Here, because they cognize internally, they cause the external six evolving consciousnesses constantly to become defiled. The word "defiled" (saṃkleśa) applies generally to the three natures of sāsrava.
