The Commentary states: Sentient beings, on account of these four afflictions, constantly grasp at a self and so forth, sinking and revolving in saṃsāra. Here, the word "sinking" (lún) means drowning. "Revolving" (huí) means turning, like the turning of a wheel without rest, sinking into saṃsāra and unable to escape or attain the noble path and so forth. This explains the term "afflictions" (kleśa): they are therefore called afflictions. They vex and disturb practitioners, afflicting and burdening their bodies and minds.
