The Commentary states: "And" has the meaning of differentiation, showing that the essences of the various mental factors are distinct from each other. Furthermore, "and" has the meaning of "and so forth," citing the four afflictions and so forth along with the rest, contact and so forth; however, here this master explains the word "and" solely in terms of aggregation. The preceding four afflictions and the subsequent five omnipresent factors aggregate into these nine dharmas associated with this consciousness. To show that it is not only a single dharma associated with this, it aggregates the nine dharmas concomitant with it; therefore, the word "and" is set down to make it known that there are nine. The first part above, explaining the root verse, is completed; next is explaining why no remaining mental factors are associated. In order to understand, a question must be raised again.
