The Commentary states: Below establishes the rationale; it is text from the Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā and is identical to this, meaning that if separated from torpor and the rest, it would not constitute defilement. Torpor is unserviceability; 'and the like' includes the remaining four. How is this known? Fascicle 1 of the Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā says: 'Torpor has unserviceability as its nature; restlessness has lack of tranquility as its nature; lack of faith has lack of endurance and so forth as its nature; indolence has the mind's lack of exertion as its nature; heedlessness has failure to guard against contaminations as its nature.' This is because without unserviceability, the defiled nature would not be established.
