The Commentary states: This root verse indicates that wherever this manas differs in meaning from the eighth consciousness, it explains it separately. If it were associated with the four feelings, the verse should have stated it separately, just as it did with the basis, object, and so forth. Since the root verse is concise and does not separately state that "it is associated with feelings," we know that, like the eighth, it is associated only with equanimous feeling. Question: Since there are differences regarding the ripening [nature], possessing all seeds, and so forth, why does it not speak separately [here] of this consciousness? Answer: Those are specific characteristics of the eighth's own nature; here as well, the own-nature of the [seventh] consciousness is explained. Furthermore, by stating "defiled," it is shown to differ from the eighth, so it is not spoken of separately. If the five [omnipresent factors] such as contact are the same, why are they now mentioned? Why was it not necessary to mention the difference in number? Because attachment and so forth are added. Why does it not mention "revolving constantly like a torrent"? Because [saying that it is] abandoned in three states shows that it does not revolve constantly like a torrent. It is also explained as in the Shiyao. Moreover, if it were associated with the four feelings, then the vajra-like mind would not cut them off all at once, because a portion would have been severed in earlier states. Question: If so, how does this differ from the innate defilements of the desire realm that are not subdued [until later]? Answer: Because those have already been abandoned forever in each preceding bhūmi, whereas this [seventh consciousness's defilement] is to be abandoned forever all together in the end.
