The Commentary states: If, when the Noble Path arises in the śaikṣa and aśaikṣa stages, there were no seventh consciousness to serve as the support for the sixth, both the thesis (pratijñā) and the reason (hetu) established by those two treatises would have faults. That is, if one makes the general claim that the sixth mental consciousness definitely has a co-arising, uncommon, predominant, distinct support, that contradicts a part of one's own tenet, because one's own system posits that in the Noble Path and in an aśaikṣa, the mental consciousness has no such support. If one qualifies it, saying that 'excluding the mental consciousness in the Noble Path and in an aśaikṣa, other mental consciousnesses definitely have this support,' then there is the fault of contradiction with inference, because this part of mental consciousness without support serves as an inference against the other [part] claimed to have a support. If one takes 'being included within the six consciousnesses' as the reason to establish the former general thesis, then this reason incurs the fault of being inconclusive in itself (an-aikāntika): is it that, like the five consciousnesses, because it is included within the six consciousnesses, mental consciousness has a support; or is it that, like the mental consciousness in your Noble Path and in an aśaikṣa, because it is included within the six consciousnesses, mental consciousness has no support? If one takes the reason 'being included within the six consciousnesses' to establish the latter qualified thesis, there would be the fault of contradiction with one's own proposition and counter-inconclusive fallacy (viruddha-avyabhicārin). Namely: that part of mental consciousness definitely has no support; because it is included within the six consciousnesses; like the mental consciousness in your Noble Path and in an aśaikṣa; hence there is no seventh. The theses and reasons of the inferences in the Mahāyānasaṃgraha and the Great Treatise would all incur these errors. Those skilled in hetuvidyā should know this.
