The Commentary states: Third, the Sautrāntika master defends [his position], saying: "The five consciousnesses have no simultaneous basis; the five faculties in the preceding moment give rise to the subsequent five consciousnesses, and the same is true of the mental consciousness. As for the refutation that our positive example is invalid, it is because we do not accept simultaneous cause and effect." This doctrine is incorrect, because it is refuted by universally established phenomena directly observed in the world: the five consciousnesses and the five faculties are like a sprout and its shadow, which must be simultaneous. Since the shadow arises from the sprout and is necessarily simultaneous [with it], one should know that the five consciousnesses and five faculties are likewise.
