The Commentary states: Second, direct refutation. In both of those two absorptions the six consciousnesses are extinguished; since the extinction of the six consciousnesses is identical, and their school maintains there is no seventh consciousness, [there would be no distinction]. "No distinction in the number of entities" means that what is extinguished in the two absorptions consists of twenty-two citta and caitasika dharmas each; since these twenty-two items that can be extinguished are taken as the entity of the absorption, there would be no distinction. In the Hīnayāna there are only twenty-one, because there are only ten wholesome universal (kuśala-mahābhūmika) factors. If there is no defiled seventh manas present in the absorption of non-conception (asaṃjñi-samāpatti) and absent in the absorption of cessation (nirodha-samāpatti), what distinction would there be between the two? If the seventh exists, it is absent in the absorption of cessation and present in the absorption of non-conception; thus the number of extinguished entities differs in quantity. Non-conception extinguishes one consciousness, whereas the absorption of cessation extinguishes two consciousnesses, so each has its difference. Since there is no seventh, there would be no distinction. Now, extinguishing the seventh means only extinguishing its defiled aspect. The Mahāyānasaṃgraha objects: "Since both extinguish [thought], what is the difference?" It did not determine the number of entities in the Mahāyāna absorptions; now, in determining it, we follow the number extinguished together with the seventh consciousness. The difference in quantity between the two absorptions is metaphorically posited collectively upon the seeds, unified with the difference in the number extinguished.
