The Commentary states: But they defend their position, saying that the two absorptions differ by the distinctions of preparatory cultivation and the rest. The Mahāyānasaṃgraha says: "The notion of departure and the notion of quiet dwelling are precisely the preparatory cultivations (prayoga) spoken of here." "Ream" refers to the three realms; "stage" refers to the nine stages; "support" refers to the bodily support, because the supports for noble ones and ordinary beings are distinct. "And the rest" includes the two acquisitions (prāpti), the two names, internal and external teachings, the fruits of five aggregates and four aggregates, and various other differences. That the two absorptions differ [in this way] is incorrect, because the causes for the distinction of those preparatory cultivations exist only due to this seventh consciousness; if this seventh consciousness did not exist, the distinctions of those preparatory cultivations would also not exist. That is, because the seventh consciousness is not extinguished in ordinary beings, all noble ones revile the absorption of non-conception and do not delight in entering it; because it is extinguished in noble ones, all noble ones delight in [the absorption of cessation]. It is because of this that one can speak of distinctions in preparatory cultivation and the rest. If there were no seventh, there would be no ordinary being to feel revulsion and no noble one to delight in it; therefore, the preparatory cultivations and the rest would have no cause for distinction.
