The Commentary states: In this there are two parts: first, concluding the preceding and introducing the subsequent, to open the treatise; second, stating the verse to answer the question directly. Regarding this transformative consciousness, there are nine verses in total, distinguishing it through nine aspects: first, the varieties of the transformative consciousness; second, its self-nature; third, its cognitive mode (ākāra); fourth, the three moral natures (trisvabhāva); fifth, its associated mental factors (caitasika); sixth, its co-arising with the three feelings; seventh, its basis (āśraya); eighth, its simultaneous operation; ninth, its arising and ceasing. The four verses alone clearly state what can be known. However, the five verses in between, beginning with the universal mental factors, re-elucidate the nature of the associated dharmas mentioned before, and are not a separate aspect distinguishing the six consciousnesses. Although there are nine verses, they are synthesized into three sections: 1. Explaining the first four aspects, which is this one verse; 2. The associated mental factors and co-arising with the three feelings, which are the following six verses; 3. Reliance, simultaneous operation, and arising and ceasing, which are the final two verses.
