[The Commentary states:] That which among the twelve sense-spheres (āyatana) is specifically called "phenomenon" refers to the sixth external sense-sphere being specifically named "phenomenon", because it does not share a common name with the other objects. This specific phenomenon is discerned by the sixth [consciousness]; from what is uniquely discerned, it receives that name. Therefore, only the sixth consciousness is phenomenon-consciousness; it also receives the name phenomenon-consciousness from its being exclusive (asādhāraṇa). Here the words "can discern" refer to the darśanabhāga, while the word "differentiate" refers to the nimittabhāga; it does not mean that because the word "discern" has "differentiate" after it, one simply speaks of discerning. Or [it means that] the sixth can discern that phenomenon-sphere, and so is uniquely named phenomenon-consciousness; in that case the words "discerning" reside only in the darśanabhāga—this meaning is also present. However, that it is specifically named from being non-common is the primary intention.
