[The Commentary states:] It is by this principle that the six consciousnesses get their names, each having its own strength, without any flaw of mutual confusion. The Kośa states: Although objects such as form are all generally called phenomena, only the dharmadhātu is named phenomenon (dharma), while the rest are not called phenomena; although a general appellation is indicated, it is actually a specific name; the mind can discern this, and so is named phenomenon-consciousness. Question: The six consciousnesses getting their names on the basis of faculty or on the basis of object—does this apply only to ordinary beings, or does it apply generally across the three vehicles?
