The Commentary states: In this explanation there are four parts: first, stating the thesis; second, indicating the dharmas; third, citing proof; fourth, concluding summary. This covers the first two. The five consciousnesses all broadly have these four natures. As for the reasoning: greed and delusion associated with the five consciousnesses arise spontaneously; because hatred is unwholesome, it is excluded here. And as for the afflictions of the sixth mental consciousness in the realms of pure suffering that do not initiate karma—the treatises in fascicles sixty-seven, sixty-eight, and so on say: the afflictions that do not initiate karma are the three such as greed, namely delusion, conceit, and craving. A portion of the afflictions of the path of cultivation, along with the two views of self and extreme, are entirely indeterminate.
