5.911

The Commentary states: Furthermore, in the five consciousnesses, torment and gladdening are both non-conceptual, and thus are called pain and pleasure; the mind has conceptual torment and gladdening, and thus is grief and joy. Furthermore, in the five consciousnesses, torment and gladdening are both coarse and heavy, and thus are called pain and pleasure; in the mind, they are subtle, and thus are called grief and joy. Furthermore, in the mental consciousness, torment and gladdening are active and elated, and thus are called grief and joy; in the five consciousnesses, they are merely active but not elated, and thus are called pain and pleasure. These are the distinct characteristics of the two. 'Active' means coarsely stirring; 'elated' means leaping with enthusiasm.
