The Commentary states: In the Mahāyāna, the preliminary stages of the first and second [dhyānas] have joy; in Yogācārabhūmi [fascicle] fifty-seven, the threshold stage has eleven faculties including joy; the second fascicle of the Prakaraṇāryavācā is also like this. Why is there no pleasure? Because that gladdening does not pervade the five faculties; it merely gladdens the mental consciousness and a small portion of the physical body, as that treatise itself says that the gladdening does not fully pervade. It is also like this in [fascicle] fifty-seven, as will be understood below. The fundamental first and second [dhyānas] are called joy and pleasure because they gladden the five faculties and because they are active and elated. They are additionally called joy; that of the desire realm is readily understood. Fascicle fifty-seven, the seventh fascicle of the Abhidharma[-samuccaya-bhāṣya], the second fascicle of the Prakaraṇāryavācā, and so on are all identical.
