The Commentary states: Because those various hells are entirely pain, there is exclusively pain and no sorrow, because the distress is especially severe and they are oppressed by pain; furthermore, there is no conceptualization, because sorrow can only arise through conceptualization. 'Nāraka' is translated here as 'vessel of pain', the place where retribution is experienced. 'Naraka' is the one who experiences that pain; hence the two are different. Question: Because there is no conceptualization, is there no conceptual affliction? Answer: Not so. Could it be that because the third dhyāna has pleasure without conceptualization, it also lacks the view of the path of seeing and so forth? Sorrow is precisely conceptualization, conceptualization born of deliberate effort; since distress is extreme, it does not depend on conceptualization. Furthermore, even if they lack this conceptualization, there is no contradiction regarding afflictions. How is this known?
