The Commentary states: Fascicle Fifty-Seven states: Question: How many faculties does one born in naraka possess? Answer: Eight are possessed in both actualization and seed; with the exception of three, the remaining ones are either possessed or not possessed. The three are not possessed in terms of actualization, while their seeds are either possessed—meaning those destined for parinirvāṇa—or not possessed, those lacking the quality of nirvāṇa. The other three are not possessed in actualization, but are possessed as seeds. The places of pure pain among pretas and animals are also like this. If in places of mixed sensations, the latter three are possessed in both seed and actualization. The eight possessed in both actualization and seed are: the five faculties, mind, and life-faculty make seven; the three unpolluted faculties are definitely not possessed in actualization, while their seeds may or may not be possessed, due to the distinction between having the nature and lacking the nature. Among the three whose seeds are definitely possessed but whose actualization is not possessed, joy and pleasure are definitely not possessed in actualization. The five including faith, etc., and the two gender faculties may not be possessed in actualization, due to distinctions of having severed or not severed wholesome roots, or having one or two gender characteristics. The former master's intention is: taking the faculty of sorrow as the eighth, which is definitely possessed. The faculty of pain enters into the indeterminate; the faculty of equanimity enters into the three whose actualization is not possessed while whose seeds are definitely possessed, because adventitious sensations of equanimity are definitely absent there. This master places the faculty of equanimity into the eighth, because it is associated with the seventh and eighth consciousnesses; places the faculty of pain into the indeterminate in actualization, because that faculty of pain has times of being possessed and not possessed during rebirth, death, etc.; and places the faculty of sorrow into the three whose actualization is not possessed, because its seed must exist. Therefore, proving that in hell the other three are not possessed in actualization while definitely possessed as seeds, we know that the mind has pain, and a portion of pretas and animals are also like this.
