The Commentary states: The claim that whichever one possesses—the male or female faculty—constitutes the eighth [faculty], and therefore is definitely possessed, is also illogical, because gender is not fixed. Now it is said that upon being born there one definitely possesses them; yet, for example, the male faculty is not definitely possessed by everyone after birth there. Furthermore, ghosts, animals, and the like are produced by bad karma, so they can be genderless, and there is no text denying this. Question: The second [chapter of the] Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra states that beings of apparitional birth either possess all faculties or do not possess them all; why then do beings in hell definitely possess the five faculties, while it is not admitted that they definitely possess either the male or female faculty?
