The Commentary states: Below, an analogy is adduced to challenge [them]. Mental gladness is called pleasure and lacks the joy faculty; that is the third dhyāna. Correspondingly, in the place of supreme suffering, mental anguish is called pain and lacks the sorrow faculty; thus sorrow does not exist. Question: According to the latter master, the sixth consciousness exists; does this associated equanimity feeling exist in that place or not? Answer: There is no obstacle to its existing. Works such as the Abhidharma[-samuccaya] state that truly in the final position, it is associated with equanimity. Alternatively, stating that it does not exist also presents no obstacle.
