The Commentary states: Fifth, a general conclusion. Therefore it is known that the feeling of mental anguish, in a place of pure suffering, is also called the pain faculty, and at other times the feeling of mental anguish is sorrow. If in hell there is no pleasure and so forth, how can they have material food? For it is only by producing joy and pleasure that food is constituted. Chapter sixty-six and others speak of food only in terms of other destinies and places where producing joy and pleasure is called food, as stated in chapter four of the Great Treatise and elsewhere. In hell, the wind between the viscera serves as material food, nourishing the body merely to prevent it from decaying, and its continuity is called food. It produces its equanimity feeling, not that it must produce joy and pleasure. 'Joy and pleasure' is an expression common to places of mixed feeling. In the seventh fascicle below there is another different explanation, which should be cited there.
