The Commentary states: This refers to having only two aspects toward the object, hence it speaks of two arising. Here we say that two arise toward two objects: taking the agreeable as the first, combining with the remaining gives four. The present treatise merely adduces combinations with the agreeable of desire: that is, combining the agreeable and the determined as the first, desire and resolve arise together; combining the agreeable and the previously practiced objects, desire and mindfulness arise together; combining the agreeable and the contemplated, desire and concentration arise together; combining the agreeable and the contemplated, desire and wisdom arise together. Next, taking the determined as the first, combining with the remaining gives three: that is, combining the determined and the previously practiced objects, resolve and mindfulness arise together; combining the determined and the contemplated, resolve and concentration arise together; combining the determined and the contemplated, resolve and wisdom arise together. Next, taking the previously practiced as the first gives two: that is, combining the previously practiced and the contemplated, mindfulness and concentration arise together; combining the previously practiced and the contemplated, mindfulness and wisdom arise together. Next, concentration and wisdom arising together toward the contemplated constitutes one. The present treatise mentions three: adducing the first two and this final one, there are in total ten pairs as described before.
