The Commentary states: The second master says: It is not that the five consciousnesses definitively possess these, but rather at times they may possess all of them. If the superior mental consciousness has predominant wishing for a future object or the like, then the five consciousnesses lack it. When apprehending a present object, induced by the mental consciousness, a subtle and weak wishing also delights in the present object; thus they possess desire. The eighth [consciousness] is not induced by the mental consciousness; it arises spontaneously and does not delight in objects, and therefore lacks desire. Although the five consciousnesses do not possess predominant scrutiny of objects as does the sixth consciousness, because they are induced by the mental consciousness, they also possess the subtle and weak function of endorsing objects. Although the five consciousnesses lack mindfulness directed toward the substance of an object previously experienced, as does the sixth consciousness, they also possess, induced by the mental consciousness, subtle and weak mindfulness directed toward present objects. Because present objects are of the same type as past ones, since they are mindful of the present, they also possess mindfulness. As for the sixth consciousness, it is also mindful of the substance of an object previously experienced in the past, and it is also mindful of the type of an object previously experienced in the present; therefore, it is predominant, and all are induced by the mind.
