The Commentary states: Although the five consciousnesses lack deep apprehension through inference, they also possess a subtle and weak discernment; therefore they are accompanied by discernment. Hence, the sixty-sixth fascicle of the Great Treatise states that the two superknowledges of the divine eye and divine ear are wisdom associated with those two consciousnesses. The former master's explanation of this was as stated before. Since these two consciousnesses possess discernment, by analogy the remaining three consciousnesses do so as well. It is either morally indeterminate, innate discernment, or discernment acquired through effort, because that which is accomplished through listening, reflection, and cultivation belongs to that category. When the Buddhabhūmi-śāstra states that, setting aside the knowledge of the exhaustion of taints and [other] superknowledges, the remaining superknowledges are subsumed under the wondrously observing wisdom, this is because the mental consciousness co-arising with the eye and ear also constitutes the two superknowledges, and because it continues for a long time without interruption, whereas the five consciousnesses are frequently interrupted. Thus, it says that those co-arising with mental consciousness are for the most part subsumed under the wondrously observing wisdom.
