The Commentary states: The author of the treatise raises an objection, saying: it would have to be common to the three natures, because one has fondness for objects of the three [natures]. If one grants that it is common to the three natures, its substance should be desire, because desire takes delight in what is cherished. If your faith has wholesome and unwholesome kinds, unwholesome lack of faith may indeed exist, but among indeterminate states, faith does not exist, nor is it desire. Furthermore, regarding faith directed toward the three [natures], faith is not of the three natures; why should fondness directed toward the three be solely wholesome in nature? To ward off this objection, this statement is made. Moreover, faith arises with respect to all four noble truths; if fondness and delight were faith, faith would not take the two truths of suffering and origination as its intentional object, for what noble one would have fondness and delight toward suffering and origination? Therefore, the truths of suffering and origination would not be intentional objects of faith.
