6.253

述曰：謂於自身生自尊愛增上，於法生貴重、增上二種力故。「崇賢重善，羞恥過惡」，謂作是意言：我如是身乃作諸惡，彼法甚好，次依用之。即雖依周、孔之書皆名貴法，世禮儀故；然以刑防惡，如國法律，即是後文「世間愧」攝。

The Commentary states: It means generating self-respect and love toward oneself as predominant, and generating esteem and respect toward the Dharma through the two kinds of predominant powers. Regarding "revering the virtuous and esteeming the wholesome, and feeling ashamed of transgressions and evil": it means entertaining the thought: "Possessing such a person as I do, should I commit evil? That Dharma is exceedingly excellent; I must next rely on and practice it." Even relying on the books of the Duke of Zhou and Confucius is termed esteeming the Dharma, because they are mundane propriety; yet guarding against evil with punishments, like the laws of a state, is subsumed under the "mundane remorse" mentioned later.
