述曰：下總解有四：一、會舊文；二、難古說；三、釋外問；四、解自他。此初也。羞恥等是慚、愧二法之通相，故諸《對法》、《顯揚》等依此通相假說為二別體。彼雖言他、自增上等，然是起緣，非是別相，今難彼言。

The Commentary states: The general explanation below has four parts: first, reconciling old texts; second, objecting to ancient expositions; third, explaining external questions; fourth, explaining self and other. This is the first. Feeling ashamed and the like are the common characteristic of the two phenomena of shame and remorse; therefore, texts like the Abhidharmasamuccaya and the Prakaraṇāryavācā rely on this common characteristic to metaphorically designate them as their two distinct substances. Although they speak of the predominance of others, self, and so forth, these are the conditions of arising, not the distinct characteristics. Now [the treatise] objects to them.
