The Commentary states: The detailed explanation below has two parts: first, resolving the previous objection; second, distinguishing the varieties. This is the first. 'Valiant' indicates being high and superior thought-moment by thought-moment, unlike defiled dharmas, which, even if they increase, are all called 'regression' with respect to wholesome factors and are not called 'advancement,' because there is no beneficial advancement. 'Advancement' means advancing to accomplish the body of a noble one. 'Resolute indicates unadulterated purity,' which excludes the four non-defiled neutral states. Although they may be cultivated through preparatory attention, they are not unadulterated and pure, not according with correct principle; therefore they are not called 'unadulterated.' Moreover, because they are not defiled, they might provisionally be called 'pure.' Here, 'unadulterated and pure' serves as the general explanation.
