6.436

The Commentary states: If equanimity (upekṣā) and non-negligence (apramāda) existed only in the supramundane path, the mind of the mundane path should not be tranquil, because it would lack equanimity, just like defiled minds and so forth. It also should be incapable of preventing evil and cultivating the good, because it would lack non-negligence, also just like defiled minds and so forth. Since it does have tranquility and so forth, it has equanimity and non-negligence. Furthermore, the mundane wholesome mind should not subdue restlessness (auddhatya) or subdue negligence (pramāda), because it would lack that which remedies them, just like defiled minds and so forth. Since we know this is so for the mundane path, by analogy it also exists in distracted wholesome [minds]. Thus there is a formal inference: In distracted wholesome [minds] and so forth, these two ought to exist; because it is a wholesome mind, because it possesses the four dharmas; just like the supramundane path.
