The Commentary states: The second master. "Desired" means a sphere that is sought; whether the sphere's intrinsic nature is delightful or loathsome, as long as on that delightful thing, when not yet attained one hopes to unite with it, and when already attained one wishes not to be separated from it; and on a loathsome thing, when not yet attained one wishes not to encounter it, and having encountered it one wishes to be separated from it—in all these desire can arise. Thus the treatise merely says: "seeking union, separation, etc.," where "etc." includes those; namely, by taking both of these as cognitive objects, desire can arise; the rest of the text can be understood. Therefore its scope is broader than the first, and only the first seven consciousnesses or only the sixth have this desire. Toward neutral spheres, desire does not arise at all; this pertains to all eight consciousnesses, or only the first six and the eighth, because the seventh consciousness is constantly seeking.
