The Commentary states: The following text has three parts: first, reconciling the earlier cited text; second, adducing mundane facts; third, assimilating other teachings. This is the first part. On the path of cultivation, the innate also includes the view of permanence, because Yogācāra and other works speak according to its coarse characteristics. What is meant by coarse characteristics? When one who has attained direct realization enters the contemplation of selflessness, having already known that the intellectually formed self has been eradicated, upon emerging from the contemplation they give rise to fear and dread: 'Where then is the self of me now?' The first 'self' is the innate self; the second 'self' mentioned is the intellectually formed self. Where are the self of the path of cultivation, the self of conventional designation, and the intellectually formed self? Based on this, when first emerging from contemplation, conditioned by nirvāṇa, they give rise to the terrifying view of annihilation; it is not said that there is no view of permanence in the path of cultivation. How is this illustrated?
