[The Commentary states:] What has been explained above is according to the subtle and precise meaning. Following coarse marks: first, they arise predominantly in accordance with their mental mode; second, following the marks in the Hīnayāna, the five factors such as anger are associated solely with distress and equanimity, because they are portions of ill-will and are sorrowful modes [of operation]. Concealment and stinginess are associated with joy and equanimity, because they are portions of attachment and delusion, and are glad modes [of operation]. The remaining three—deceit, fraud, and arrogance—further add pleasant feeling because they exist in higher stages; excluding pain and distress, they are solely glad modes [of operation]. The middle and great [secondary afflictions], according to coarse marks, are also as their own true meaning was stated here before, because they common to both discordant and concordant mental modes.
