述曰：此第一師，小十下者不得緣上，此十行相淺近，不能遠深取彼界故。嫉上地者，嫉名聞故，嫉心不以彼地為質，故非如餘心行相深遠取。慳相亦爾，此義應思，十並不上緣。

[The Commentary states:] This is the first master. The lower ten minor ones cannot take higher stages as objects, because the mental modes of these ten are shallow and proximate, unable to deeply and remotely apprehend that realm. If one envies a higher stage, it is because one envies reputation; the envious mind does not take that stage as its objective basis, so it does not apprehend deeply and remotely like other mental modes. The mark of stinginess is also like this. This meaning should be pondered: all ten do not take higher stages as objects.
