The Commentary states: 'Defiled' refers to the obscured, and 'pure' refers to the unobscured. Within the two kinds of indeterminate [natures]—the defiled and the pure—the three beginning with torpor all extend [to both], because in the path of cultivation in the desire realm, the two views are accompanied by torpor and so forth, and the first dhyāna contains investigation and analysis. Remorse is not defiled-indeterminate, because its comprehension is coarse and fierce; thus it is not associated with the two views, as defilement [in its case] is necessarily unwholesome.
