The Commentary states: The second master says: They also cognize higher realms. Because there are those with wrong views who regret cultivating meditative absorption, regret can cognize the higher. It also extends to excessive pride and wrong views: slandering cessation and regretting the cultivation of meditative absorption in the intermediate existence means being born above and also arousing lower regret. The earlier text spoke according to the majority of cases, while this relies on the actual principle. Another explanation holds that at that time [in intermediate existence] the duration is extremely brief, not allowing regret to arise; this is based on the co-presence of wrong views and regret in the stage of fundamental existence, so there is no fault of being born above and arousing lower regret. Dreams can universally cognize matters previously experienced; among matters previously experienced, they include phenomena and concentrations of higher stages, and so forth. Higher afflictions and the like are all distinguished in this manner throughout the three realms; therefore, when born above, one should be able to arouse lower remorse. That is, when one arousing wrong views in the intermediate existence regrets what was done previously, the treatises do not allow remorse to be associated with the nine fundamental afflictions, so at the time of wrong view there is no possibility of arousing remorse; it is rather aroused at a different time, not occurring together with the mind slandering cessation, so they do not contradict each other. Another explanation holds that in reality it is also associated with wrong views and associated with anger; the treatises do not allow association with wrong views, anger, and so forth based on the majority of cases, but allowing their association makes the meaning stable.
