[The Commentary states:] Because the various mental factors only arise in dependence on the mind, and are produced relying on the force of the mind, it is said that the mind appears like those factors of greed, faith, and so forth, not that the substance of those mental factors is regarded as the mind itself. When it subsequently says that there are no distinct defiled or wholesome phenomena and so forth, it means that apart from these mental factors that resemble greed and other phenomena, there are no distinct, real defiled or wholesome phenomena outside the mind; it does not mean that greed and so forth, which are resembled, are also non-existent. 'Resembling' has two meanings: first, having no distinct substance, and being called 'resembling' because it is produced from the mind—the manifestation resembling the two divisions is an example of this; second, although having a distinct substance, being called 'resembling' because it is only produced from the mind and has it as its preeminent support—greed and so forth are examples of this. Now the verse uses 'resembling' in a general sense because it covers both of these; it is not that one serves as the rule for all. This specifically resolves the sūtra in the first objection. Next, resolving in general the sūtras and so forth in the first objection.
