[The Commentary states:] In the prose below, the text is divided into two parts: first, formally explaining the text of the verse; and second, from 'Therefore, the eight consciousnesses of all sentient beings' downward, summarizing and assessing the three preceding transformations. In the first part there are three sections: first, explaining the support; next, from 'as for the five consciousnesses' downward, explaining the characteristics of being together and not together; and finally, from 'due to the five evolving consciousnesses' downward, explaining the states of arising and cessation. This is the first section. 'Root consciousness' refers to the ādānavijñāna, because it serves as the support for both defiled and pure consciousnesses. Purity refers to the undefiled, which extends universally to the stages of the two vehicles, bodhisattvas, and so forth. If one were to call it ālayavijñāna, its stage would be too narrow. It is called 'root' because it is the origin and cause of arising, its meaning being identical to the root consciousness of the Mahāsāṃghika school. Having finished explaining the lower three characters of the first line, it now explains the upper two characters.
