7.219

[The Commentary states:] 'The five consciousnesses' takes up the phrase from the verse. It refers to the first five evolving consciousnesses, indicating that they are the consciousnesses produced by the five sense faculties such as the eye. Why are they spoken of collectively in one place? Because their types are similar, they are spoken of collectively. First, they all rely on physical faculties; second, they all take physical objects as cognitive objects; third, they all cognize only the present; fourth, they are all attained through direct perception (pratyakṣa); fifth, they all have interruptions. Since their types are similar, they are combined and stated collectively. This refers to the top two characters of the second line.
