[The Commentary states:] It is simply that the five consciousnesses internally rely on the root consciousness—namely, seeds—and externally depend on multiple conditions to be able to manifest. Because although seeds are constant, the meeting of external conditions has sudden and gradual aspects, five, four, three, two, or one consciousness may arise; because arising from five down to one is indeterminate, they are either together or not together. Fascicle Seventy-six of the *Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra* states: 'Viśālamati! With the ādāna as support and foundation, if at that time the conditions for the arising of one eye consciousness are present, then at that time one eye consciousness turns; ... up to if five conditions are suddenly present, then at that time the five consciousness bodies turn', and so forth. Therefore, depending on whether the conditions are complete or incomplete, the five consciousnesses arise in greater or lesser number, either together or not together.
