The Commentary states: Later it may also become manifest in the two higher realms; that is, in the two realms it can arise later, but it does not arise later in the desire realm, because one can only attain it when one is an anāgāmin or above. Fascicle fifty-six says: 'One who gives rise to it first gives rise to it here; later it becomes manifest again in the form realm, because it can only arise by relying on the basis of form. This is based on the perspective where the eighth consciousness is not yet established; if the eighth is already established, it is obtainable everywhere.' This is based on the teaching in which the eighth consciousness has already been established, established according to ultimate truth. The Udāyi-sūtra serves as evidence for this, as explained extensively in fascicle five of the Abhidharmakośa. Udāyi means 'emerging', for he was born at sunrise, hence the name. Speaking of 'mind-made gods' means transcending solid food; the Buddha said this refers to the form realm. If that were not so, since it is said that transcending solid food and receiving birth in any one place, a body of mind-made gods can enter and emerge from this concentration, we know this extends to the formless realm; the sūtra does not exclude it, saying 'in any one [place]'. Interpreting this sūtra, Śāriputra said that there are those who regress and arise later in the form realm; Udāyi did not understand the words 'mind-made gods', thinking it meant neither-conceptualisation-nor-non-conceptualisation. However, he did not know that there is an eighth consciousness, and having been born in the stage of neither-conceptualisation-nor-non-conceptualisation, one could not later give rise to this concentration; thus he debated with the Elder. The Buddha knew he did not understand Śāriputra's explanation and therefore rebuked him; he did not deny that one can enter this concentration in the formless realm, as explained in fascicles one and one hundred fifty-three of the Mahāvibhāṣā. Question: Can all who are born in the formless realm enter it, or are there some who cannot? Answer:
